Ask each student to fill out a secret questionnaire - what's their favorite song, what they like about it and why. You can give them an example at the top of the page - something like:
Stan Getz Girl from Ipanema
I like that it uses a language that I don't understand but it doesn't matter. I like the way the beat of the song is both relaxing and exciting at the same time. The saxophone solo is breathy and cool and suits the song perfectly. I really like the first time I heard it I was on vacation having a great time and it reminds of that each time I hear it.
After you collect the answers you can double check the lyrics and content at youtube then allow the song to be played in part or whole and read the answers.
You can also have other kids comment without telling them who chose the song. They are not allowed to use terms like good or bad - only explanatory phrases. See if they can guess just from listening to the comments and music.
You can go a step further and ask the kids to 'explain' how they feel when they hear songs of your choice... again, not using just thumbs up or down.
Engaging them is going to be key - no pun intended!

Congrats on your new teaching position. Stay in touch - Stephanie
ok, I have been thinking about your music appreciation class and now I have an idea for you. I took a History of Jazz class up at Utah State and the teacher did this as part of the lecture:
he would lecture about several artists from a certain time frame and then let us listen to music from that time frame written by those artists....then he would test us on them. So we had to know the artists, the time frame or era that they were popular and then also be able to match the artist to his/her song. The tests were half written and half listening. It was actually a really cool way to learn about the artists. He had the songs on the internet and so we could just download them and study them on our own. It was pretty cool. History of Jazz was not a class that I was excited to take, however I learned a lot and actually enjoyed the class.
Good luck
love ya
